Designer Spotlight: Scott Sternberg

MARCH 15, 2013

INPINKSTYLE.POLYVORE.COM

Scott Sternberg says his collection Boy. by Band of Outsiders was inspired by the Japanese movie Battle Royale. That certainly increases its indie street cred which has been his label's lifeblood, and I wondered how much marketing wizardry was behind the claim. It’s a struggle to see much of the film’s ethos in these pieces, at first.

Where Battle Royale is tense and difficult to endure, this collection is effortless. The lines are soft, the draping: elegant. What’s easy to miss is the subtle tribal theme throughout the work, almost invisible behind the femininity and vibrancy of the pieces. Considering that, it becomes apparent that what this brutal film contributed to this collection is the notion that our primal natures might be inescapable, and there is beauty in that, too.

Trend Report: Colorblocking

Colorblock with conviction! Pairing bright, saturated colors like cobalt and pink create a confident, eye-catching look. Go all out with cobalt skinnies and a pink blouse, as shown here, or colorblock your accessories for a more toned-down interpretation.
